As a hobby beekeeper, I know how challenging it can be to manage just 2 or 3 colonies. While there are a hundreds of books, magazine articles, and youtube videos I can access, much of what bees do and why they do it is still a mystery. Andy has been very generous about sharing his years of experience with me. I recently spent a day with him, observing the colonies he keeps near his home, building on my own knowledge base, and seeing first hand how the honey the Co-op is buying from him is produced. Andy is a man of strong opinions and has very specific standards for raising bees. If a colony is weak, diseased, bad at foraging, or unable to survive winter, they die.

However, if they are strong, they survive and propagate, raising more strong bees.

After many seasons of bee-evolution, his colonies are thriving. Bees like that make great honey. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Big Leaf Maple trees bloom in the spring, when the weather is usually too cold and wet for bees to build up their colonies and go out to forage. However, this spring the weather was warm and dry so the bees went to work! Andy and his partner, Bonnie, were able to harvest a few hundred pounds of this distinct treat.

Rich, herbal, with a subtle flavor like wintergreen, maple honey is like no other. We feel even luckier that they are making organic bar soaps and lip balms just for us. This soap is everything we care about in one little package: your health, our local economy, and the planet.

Crafted with sustainably harvested and organic ingredients, grown mostly at the farm in Deming, these soaps are pure, but effective, and packaged in paper, so there is little waste. A shrub is a syrup made from fruit, sugar, and vinegar that you mix with ice and sparkling water for a quenching and invigorating beverage. Audra makes exceptionally rich and delicious shrubs from Orcas grown tree fruits.

The unique flavors of Quince, Pear, and Plum are amplified by the addition of sugar and vinegar. Try them with sparkling water or create your own signature end-of-summer cocktails. They also make a fantastic glaze for grilled meats, a drizzle for cheesecake or fresh fruit, and the flavor base for a beautiful vinaigrette.

Girl Meets Dirt Heritage Preserves with Ossau-Irraty Cheese

Skirt suit and stiletto clad, she would stare out her office window and dream of escaping the city and living in some far-flung idyll. They landed just about as far across the country as they could go — a tiny island off the northwest coast of mainland Washington state called Orcas. Starting a family proved more difficult than the couple anticipated, so Audra decided to change her focus away from birthing children to birthing a business. She jokes that Girl Meets Dirt was conceived at the family Thanksgiving dinner in , when she brought 15 stacks of boxes filled with jam jars into the dining room.

This is not a midlife crisis, or the result of a few bad days—or months—at work.

The team over at Girl Meets Dirt are doing things the old fashioned way - quality, locally sourced, and organically produced. Their preserves are rich with flavor, without the aid of artificial ingredients. Come give them a try for yourself!

March 7, by 1 Comment. Founder Audra Lawlor moved to the island back in after leaving a Wall Street job and the conveniences of city life. She, her husband and two dogs left the big city to farm five acres of land on this small island off the coast of Washington. They grow fruit and herbs that they preserve by hand using traditional French methods, that help to capture the abundant tastes of summer.
