So I really wanted to tackle this big heartbreak of a friend breakup as the main plot, with the romance and family elements I usually write about taking more of a background role this time.

What was the writing process like with a book that has both two points-of-view and two timelines? And even when you try your best, you might hurt people. Other people might hurt you. The writing process was extremely complicated, and I was stressed out about it constantly! I wrote some of it in order chronologically, some in order narratively, and many pieces as I fit them in.

I had various Excel spreadsheets to keep the timelines and emotions straight. These sorts of examinations can really bring you together with people, but they can also separate you, when it feels like goals and futures are shifting. For James and Kat, their senior year is turning out completely different than either of them expected. Kat is faced with good surprises: new romance, changes in her family that are hard but could be ultimately wonderful.

I think senior year can illuminate little differences that were there all along. Do you think the same is true for friendships? How can someone figure out if they should let the friendship go or try to heal what was broken? I think friendships can be as vital and fulfilling and as messy and toxic as any romantic relationship is capable of. I think time apart is often key; you often quickly learn if you miss the good times you have or only realize just how bad things had been.

I try to follow my gut there, but of course all relationships mean you risk vulnerability and heartbreak. Luckily the good ones are worth the risk! Are there other friendship or non-romantic-relationship- cent ric stories you want to see more of in YA?

I love friendship and I love books about it. The joy, the messiness, the closeness in chosen family! Tell us about a few published or upcoming YA books that you loved. Despite what the Spice Girls would have us believe, it's not true that friendship never ends. Research actually confirms what we've all experienced: Most middle school friendships don't even last a year. And while some adult friendships last throughout life, some make us feel like we've been sentenced for life. So how do you know when to make a break for freedom? Sometimes it's obvious: A so-called friend steals your money or your partner, or in the case of Taylor Swift , your back-up dancers.

When Friends Leave

In an admittedly strange way, I think it may be one of the nicest things one of my fellow graduate students ever said to me. Our friendship continued to grow throughout five more years of graduate school, as we compared notes about dissertations, teaching our courses, and the mental and emotional trauma of the job market. We talked each other through breakups, shared a soulless cubicle. When we took our first faculty appointments during the same semester, miles apart, we stayed in touch. Every few weeks or months we check in with one another, compare notes on the new phase, gripe about life as junior faculty, trade news about our mutual friends, themselves scattered across the country now as well. Many times I commented on how common it is, and sometimes confusing or complicating, that in an academic career some of our closest friends are also our colleagues. Of course, people come and go in all career fields. They move or are transferred, receive a better offer and leave, or even switch careers entirely.

It was getting serious with one of my Tinder matches. After a witty opener he, having studied at Oxford, asked if I was British because I somehow looked it and exchanging our jobs and educational background, we were discussing our favorite Delaware beach destination. He asked me if I wanted to hang out, and I said sure. You're so nice, and I don't want to lead you on in any way. So if that's an issue, we should probably just call it now. We did; he never responded.
