Here is a list of homebirth midwives and birth centers by state. Keep in mind that most homebirth midwives will travel long distances to attend a birth, especially in rural areas. If you live close to a state border, or live in the East, be sure to check nearby towns in neighboring states as well. Please note that I do not personally know or necessarily endorse every midwife.

Missouri Midwifery provides pregnancy, labor and birth, postpartum care, breastfeeding, well-baby, and well-woman exams for low-risk women through the services of certified nurse-midwives CNMs and registered nurses RNs. Centered on holistic care, we safely support each woman and her family through their unique birth journey.

Missouri Midwifery is committed to safely attending women, their births, and their babies. Therefore, we collaborate with appropriate health care providers so every family has timely access to both medical and alternative services when needed or desired. Clients are screened through a free consultation. Once a woman and her family are accepted for care with Missouri Midwifery, an initial prenatal care visit is scheduled. Many insurance companies cover the services of a certified nurse midwife.

After the birth, clients will be provided a statement of services to file with their insurance company for reimbursement. Most women will qualify as a Missouri Midwifery client! Your pregnancy must be classified as low-risk. We evaluate each potential client individually to ensure she and her family are the right fit for a birth at Missouri Midwifery. An ongoing risk assessment is performed at each prenatal visit to ensure mother and baby remain low-risk throughout care.

Once licensed, CNMs provide primary health care for women and babies at home, birthing centers, or the hospital. CNMs must also have an active registered nurse RN license and apply for recertification once every five years. If at any time during the pregnancy a problem is identified, the CNM may manage it, through consultation or collaboration with our Medical Director, Mark Grant. The client may be able to have joint management with the CNM and MD and still qualify for a birth at the center.

In those rare cases, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible. Ideally, true emergencies are prevented by careful assessment of mother and infant prior to and during delivery to identify potential problems before they become emergent. To ensure safety, Missouri Midwifery staff participates in ongoing training to simulate potential emergency situations. In the rare event of an emergency, an ambulance will be called and the client transferred to Cox South Hospital.

A staff member will accompany the client to the hospital. Grant has a careful risk assessment process in place for mothers who have had a prior cesarean. This risk assessment helps detemine if a trial of labor after cesarean is a viable option.

The cost of a birth in a hospital setting continues to rise. The total cost of a birth center birth is a fraction of the cost.

We would love to talk with you about convenient and flexible payment options. If you have any other questions or concerns, contact Missouri Midwifery today.! Today, nurse-midwifery care is gaining in popularity among expectant mothers seeking a gentler, more whole-person centered approach to the birthing process, and a significantly reduced likelihood of having to undergo such invasive procedures as cesarean sections and episiotomies. Just some of the services Missouri CNMs provide to patients include:.

They gave me Pitocin to induce labor, and they broke my water, and then the baby was in distress; her heart rate was plummeting, and they had to give me an episiotomy and pull her out with forceps. By the time she had her third baby, Bass had found a midwife and studied the Bradley method, mastering such deep relaxation that she waited too long to leave home. He took one look at Bass and waved them on. Finally the urge to push was too strong.
